Councillor’s wife attacked in front of campus
The wife of an Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality DA councillor sustained cuts to her neck and face when she was attacked in front of the Walter Sisulu University campus in Grey Street early on Saturday.
Chris de Wet’s wife Lorraine, 42, was walking across the street after dropping their daughter off to write an exam at 7.30am.
According to Chris, his wife was confronted by three men at her vehicle. The men seemed to be drunk.
“One of them started hurling racial slurs at her and broke a bottle and tried to stab her in the face. She covered her face and was stabbed in the arms and neck. She managed to escape and we have opened a case with the police.”
De Wet indicated there was a busload of WSU students outside the campus who had reportedly returned from an overnight excursion at the Bonkolo Dam.
He said some of the students watched and laughed as the incident happened, but there was no evidence that the attackers were students.
Police spokeswoman captain Namhla Mdleleni confirmed the incident, saying a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm had been opened, but no arrests had been made.
“Police appeal to people to behave themselves when having a good time, as most cases like this [over the weekend] are liquor-related.”
WSU spokeswoman Yonela Tukwayo said they were aware of the incident but it occurred on a public road used by everyone and happened to be close to the campus.
“There is no evidence that WSU students were involved. The university will not be investigating because it did not take place on our property and there is no evidence that WSU students were involved. We will, however, work with police to assist or support should they require us to do so.”
