Royals rule supreme with first victory of season

- ANDISA BONANI

The Queenstown Royals won by four wickets in a cricket game against the Kwelerha cricket squad on Sunday at Bunkers Hill grounds in East London.

This was the Royals’ first victory since the start of the season, with the team pulling out all the stops to ensure they were in control.

The Royals won the toss and decided to bowl first on a pitch that looked as if it would favour swing bowlers. Royals bowlers Anathi Joe and Mkululi Takane got the show started and braved the pitch.

The Kwelerha batsmen were in the line of fire as they were taking body and even head shots at times. Joe and Takane took six wickets in the first 10 overs.

Kwelerha could not take the heat and posted a low score of 78 all out in 21.4 overs with all the bowlers chipping in with wickets.

Joe took four wickets in seven overs while Takane took two wickets in six overs.

The Royals went in to bat and lost a wicket in the third over as Afzal Mohammed went out LBW.

Justin Kuyler managed to score 25 from 22 balls and Marvin Groep, who made batting look easy, scored 29 off 31 balls.

When Kuyler lost his wicket, the Royals had a mini collapse before finishing the game early and earning themselves a bonus-point victory.

The Royals’ next game will be against Masakhane Cricket Club at Queen’s College on Sunday.
