Royals bow knee to Sisonke

- ANDISA BONANI

The Sisonke Cricket Club from King William’s Town is in second place on the log standings for the Border promotion league after the plucky team beat the Queenstown Royals on Sunday.

The Royals won the toss and elected to bat first. This innings was regarded as one of the worst this season by the team’s players.

Afzal Mohammed and Marvin Groep – the latter who recently returned after an injury – opened for the Royals and had a short-lived start. Mohammed was run out with the score on less than 10 runs and Groep (6) followed his partner soon after.

Ethan O’Connor was outstanding in one of the Royals’ best batting performances of the season, scoring 65, while losing partnersin the process.

Naveed Mohammed scored 35 and was the only other batsman who contributed to the Royals’ overall score by hitting a few sixes, helping the team get to 143 all out in 35.2 overs.

Sisonke had a great start, scoring 10 runs per over.

Royals bowlers Anathi Joe and Mkululi Takane had some loose deliveries up front which were elegantly delivered over the boundary by Sisonke’s batsmen.

The local team’s heads were drooping after a few lusty blows were struck by the Sisonke batsmen.

Sisonke capitalised on a lack of fielding endeavour and started to take quick runs.

Takane took two wickets and Joe and Zeeshan Mohammed managed to get one each before Sisonke finished the game with 28 overs to spare.

Sisonke won by six wickets and also earned themselves a bonus point which placed them in second place on the log, with the Royals at No 8.
