The Rep

What do you think about

Eastern Cape premier Oscar Mabuyane recently requested President Cyril Ramaphosa to reinstate the alcohol ban in the province after a spike in violence since alcohol sales were permitted on June 1.

The Rep reporter, Ntsikelelo Qoyo, asked Komani residents their views.

Thembalam Nqandeka from Mackay s Nek

I do not drink, [but] if you ban it you have another problem of people resorting to criminality to get alcohol.

They must lift the bans on both alcohol and cigarettes and police just need to do their job and make sure people are drinking and smoking in their properties.

Nomkitha Kwanini from CBD

The ban should come back. In the short two weeks the ban has been lifted, housebreakings, car accidents and gender-based violence have increased.

A man raped a sixmonth-old child. I had a client who was stabbed by her partner in Komani. I think we will revert to our old problems and the virus will just be a secondary issue.

Maggie Sampson from Aloe Vale

I think they have to bring back the ban. People are not adhering to the rules.

When people drink there is no social distancing and they share the alcohol.

Mongeziwe Ngaleka from Ezibeleni

I think it is a good idea. Maybe they should consider limiting the days alcohol is sold. Some people do not stop, drinking Monday to Sunday.

There will be some pushback but I do not think that is a reason not to sell it.

Lester Pike from from Top Town

I personally do not have a problem with it. I think maybe if there were a quota of how much alcohol a person may buy, that might help. But I think there is a problem and the government is reacting accordingly.
