Numerous arrests made in operation

Operation Vuthu Hawe conducted in the Chris Hani policing precinct recently yielded positive results for local police.

The operation focused on compliance with the Covid-19 regulation­s and drug traffickin­g, said police spokespers­on Capt Namhla Mdleleni.

She said 48 suspects were arrested on various charges, from around Lady Frere and Whittlesea.

Of these, four were arrested for dealing in drugs, three for drunken driving and 41 were nabbed for contraveni­ng the Disaster Management Act.

Meanwhile, a multidisci­plinary operation held during the recent Easter weekend resulted in the arrest of more suspects for drunken driving and noncomplia­nce with the Covid19 regulation­s.

The joint operation between police and provincial traffic focused on various stations including Ngcobo, Komani, Ilinge and Sterkstroo­m.

In total, 207 suspects were arrested for various charges, 107 of whom contravene­d the Disaster Management Act.

During this period, 94 people were arrested for drunken driving.

Thee people were caught driving without a licence, two were arrested for selling liquor without a licence, and three on charges for possession of drugs.

All arrested suspects appeared in courts in their respective areas.

Chris Hani district commission­er, Maj-Gen Funeka Siganga, thanked all “the foot soldiers who worked tirelessly, leaving their families behind while responding to their calling”.
