Russell legacy of loving others

The next generation of Russell children are ready and waiting to continue this fine legacy.

The Russell family has always been part of our family. Hilton and Grace were both friends of my grandparents, Bob and Thelma Sterley.

Hilton and Grace were pillars of the Komani community and surrounds.

They served their community in many capacities, always looking out for where they could help others.

These two were an example to their children and all who met them in the manner that they lived their lives and served the community.

Edric and Polly continued with this tradition, immersing themselves in community life while continuing to build their brand and business.

Their love for children saw them create a safe haven in which they nurtured and raised their core family of Yvonne, Sean, Hilary, Garth, the twins Cindy and Craig, and Jeffrey.

Their home was open to youngsters from children’s homes during the holidays and Edric’s tours with Rotary Exchange Students across the length and breadth of South Africa are legendary.

Hilton and Grace started Russell and Son Funeral Directors and based their service on ensuring personalised care to families at the time of bereavement.

Just as Hilton and Grace took Edric and Polly into the family business, so too did they with Sean and Yolanda.

The time spent working together ensured the passing on of the core family values and ethos that makes Russell and Son unique and special.

And now Sean and Yolanda are ready to continue with this family tradition as they raise their family of Jonathan, Jason, Dan, Lwazi, Tammy and Jaden.

Edric and Polly’s pride knew no end with Sean taking Garth into the family business and Jeffrey learning the trade in Johannesburg.

I have had the privilege of interacting with three generations of the Russell family in a professional and personal capacity. Edric and I spent years together as Rotarians, and served on the own council of Queenstown and later the Lukhanji Municipal Council.

A highlight for me, as a local preacher, was when Edric played the organ in the Wesley Methodist Church whenever I preached.

He knew how to make the organ “talk” and filled the church with joyful music.

Lockdown saw Sean, Yolanda and their children reach out to the community of Komani with music and messages broadcast every evening from their home in support and recognition of the frontline workers. They still ensure the elderly at the old age homes receive a message and music on Sundays.

With Garth casting a watchful eye over the business, a common sight around town now is Sean and his team on his machines clearing and tidying areas in need.

His efforts have ensured businesses joining in to provide equipment and funds to clear and remove rubbish.

His father and grandfather would be proud of him as he continues the tradition of giving generously in time and means to contribute to the greater community. The next generation of Russell children are ready and waiting to continue this fine legacy.

We congratulate and thank the Russell family for a job well done.

Here is to the next 100 years!
