Police stamp their authority in district-wide operations

Police in the Chris Hani district continued to embark on operations which sought to fight criminal activity in the area, said a statement this week.

Operations conducted during the official opening of 16 Days of Activism against violence on women and children, yielded positive results including the arrest of suspects for the alleged kidnapping and assault of three women aged between 20 and 21 in Cala on November 25.

“Through operations conducted around the Chris Hani policing precinct, police followed informatio­n via social media that three females aged between 20 and 21 were allegedly kidnapped. Through response by members, the victims were found with bruises on their bodies. The suspects were arrested for kidnapping and assault and will appear before the Cala magistrate’s court soon,” the statement said.

Acting district commission­er, Brig Zuziwe Magqashela, commended the members for their swift action. “I am pleased by your swift tactical reaction which has led to the arrest of the suspects.” She also sent a stern warning to the community that the police will not tolerate any form of violence. “We will not hesitate to bring perpetrato­rs to book,” she said.

The police operations included the tracing of wanted suspects, compliance with the disaster management act as well as stopping and searching suspects.

A total of 28 suspects were arrested in various police areas in the district.

Another arrest in Cala was that of a 28-yearold man caught in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police reportedly followed up on informatio­n about a suspect who was in possession of an unlicensed firearm in one of the local taverns.

They went on to arrest the suspect and recover the weapon.

In Ngcobo, four suspects were arrested for dealing in drugs and another for drunken driving. Police issued a total of R25 000 in J534 fines to 22 people for contraveni­ng disaster management act regulation­s.

All arrested suspects were due to appear before various courts this week.
