QBBC, Ndungwana tie for top club at boxing tourney

- ZINTLE BOBELO

An overall tie between Queenstown Boys’ Boxing Club (QBBC) and Cofimvaba-based Ndungwana Boxing Club saw both teams claim the best boxing club spot at this year’s third Mandela Day boxing tournament held at the Cofimvaba Town Hall over the weekend.

Organised by the Chris Hani Amateur Boxing Organisation in partnership with Intsika Yethu Local Municipality, QBBC manager Mabhuti Mapeyi said the 38-bout tournament was well attended with participation from five clubs: Queenstown Boys Boxing Club,

Bhanda Boxing Club from Whittlesea, Ndungwana and Magwala from Cofimvaba and Mayibuye Boxing Club from Dordrecht.

The best boxer in the junior cadets went to Lufentse Ntetha of QBBC,

Unalo Jonga (Ndungwana) and Aphelele Mazola (Magwala) were named in the best female bout category, while best elite boxer went to Lihle Denga of QBBC.

“The event was a great success. The games went well and we were pleased to see the municipal leadership, mayor, speaker, councillors and special programmes unit managers present during the tournament.

“They were able to witness what the boxing fraternity is all about and what we are trying to do with this sport. We offer our gratitude to the municipality for the support and helping organise the event,” said QBBC manager Mabhuti Mapeyi.

“The aim for all these tournaments was to always develop boxing in this district.

“We do, however, have the challenge of not having a platform to conduct these tournaments. We have to travel back and forth with our boxing ring. As a result, now it is slowly getting damaged. We do appeal to our local municipalities to assist in that regard,” he said.
