Futshane’s clinic in Mlungisi providing affordable healthcare

Providing primary and affordable healthcare in disadvantaged communities is one of clinic nurse practitioner Phathiswa Futshane’s core priorities as the owner of Unjani Clinic in Mlungisi.

The healthcare facility opened its doors on the day the nation commemorated struggle icon Nelson Mandela on July 18.

Unjani Clinic is a non-profit company, an initiative that was put together to transform the country’s healthcare system and empower black female nurse practitioners. The structure ensures that donors provide funding for stakeholders to expand the Unjani Clinic network.

Due to the high demand in the Komani area, Futshane did not resist taking up the offer.

She is currently running the facility in Mlungisi together with her clinic assistant Sikho Rwayi, with the help of her husband and children.

Futshane said the reception from the community of Komani had been up to the mark, and she has called on the public to make use of the range of services that she provides.

“This initiative is supporting us women to stand up for ourselves and run our own businesses. We are providing the same services as the other general clinics. We do make referrals to the nearest hospitals when there is a need. We want the ordinary person to experience a quality private healthcare service,” said Futshane.

The clinic will welcome a student under a learnership programme on September 1 and Futshane is looking forward to also providing mobile clinic services to remote areas soon.

As Women’s Month is about to come to a close, Futshane encouraged other women to take a stand and unlearn the habit of depending on other people.

Unjani Clinic’s consultation rates range from R250 and the operating times are from Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 5pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm. Clinic number: 064-841-8297.
