Moonlight vs United Brothers headline weekend action

- MAXWELL LEVINE

The Border Premier League is set to be concluded this weekend. It is sure to be a cracker when Moonlight host United Brothers in a do-or-die encounter to determine the winners of the premier league, but most importantly gain promotion to the super league.

It has been an extraordinary season as Moonlight, in their first-ever premier league season, are unbeaten after 10 matches. They are currently in second position on the log, tight with Africans on 43 points, but Africans have already concluded their league campaign. United is fourth on 40 points after winning nine matches and losing a solitary match to Africans.

Moonlight is virtually one point away from winning the league. Taking permutations into account, a normal win or draw will be enough.

A normal win for United Brothers and making sure Moonlight do not get a point will mean United win the league. A win for United with a losing bonus point for Moonlight will mean Moonlight walks away with the trophy as they have accumulated a better point differential if both teams end on 44 points.

A five-point win for United Brothers will change the scales and they will be champions. The mandate is clear for both sides, go out and win at all costs.

Locally, the Chris Hani District league is heading for a nail-biting finish, but the lack of matches in the league has put a damper on the first season.

No matches took place last weekend when Progress were awarded points as WSU Pythons could not provide adequate medical equipment on time. Old Collegians took soft points as Blue Birds have been failing to pitch up for any matches. The match between Tarka Stars and Blue Buffs also failed to materialise.

Instead, Old Collegians took on EUR Africans from Aliwal North in a friendly match at the Army Base Fields. OC won 12-10.
