Queens College Old Boy shines in golf event

-

Gabriel de Jongh, a Queens College Old Boy and an exBorder Junior golfer, recently found himself in excellent company when he was invited to play in a UPPwC Corporate Golf Day at the Pretoria Country Club.

De Jongh joined a fourball with his golf coach, Johan Steyn, gold medallist Rocco Meiring and Kruger van Wyk, a former New Zealand cricketer and the Tuks first team cricket coach.

There was a fair amount of playful bantering between De Jongh and Steyn, who is also an iGolf coach. The two challenged each other on every hole to see who could hit the longest drive.

In golf competitions, certain holes are selected for side-competitions and prizes are awarded on those holes for the longest drive or closest to the pin.

This spurred the two men on to tackle these selected holes with added gusto.

De Jongh’s first longest drive was on the fourth hole where he succeeded with a drive of 310 metres, putting him in the winning position on this hole.

On the 12th hole, Steyn hit a magnificent drive of 300 metres straight down the fairway and the challenge was on.

De Jongh went on to settle that argument conclusively by hitting the drive of his life and placing the ball 350 metres down the fairway.

Unfortunately there was not a longest drive prize on this hole.

At the end of the competition, when all the cards were in, De Jongh’s four-ball were announced as the winners of the Golf Day, and were awarded vouchers to spend at any business in Menlyn Mall, Pretoria.
