Muslim community feeds the hungry
1,000 food parcels handed out as holiday season approaches
The festive period is known, to some, as the season of giving and the Muslim community, in collaboration with the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM), handed out 1,000 food hampers to deserving families this week.
Dr Mohammed Makada said the Muslim community had embarked on numerous food drives and other initiatives assisting those in need over the years.
“We have been distributing some food hampers and other items to the community of Komani.
“We have been here for many years and we are not here to take but to serve the communities,” he said.
“In our own way, we would like to do whatever we can to serve.
“This is a small offering from our part and we wish to do more. On a regular basis, we would like to offer and give to our community, especially those that are in dire need.” He said building mutual relationships of trust was important.
“I have been in this community for the last 36 years and we have been doing this for the last 10 years and we have provided a lot of aid to the people, even in the outlying areas and during the Covid-19 outbreak.”
In response, EMLM mayor Thembeka Bunu said: “We are happy the Good Samaritans have once again contributed in our communities.
“We know this is not the first time, even during the Covid-19 period they assisted a lot.
“We are looking forward to creating a good partnership.”
Ward 11 councillor, Andile Ganca, said the beneficiaries from disadvantaged households had been identified through the assistance of ward and street committees, with more food parcels to be handed out in all wards in Mlungisi.
