The South African Rugby Legends Association, in partnership with SA Harvest, held a coaching clinic and food drop at the NU 1 Stadium in Mdantsane, as part of their social responsibility programme.

It was a successful event and just in time for the festive period, bringing much-needed relief to many in need in the community.

Top-notch coaches, former Springboks and legends imparted their knowledge and expertise to the hordes of youngsters who attended the coaching clinic.

Two of the coaches attending are Komani legends.

Queen’s College old boy, and Springbok, Khaya Malotana, and former Maria Louw Secondary School speedster, former Sharks player and Springbok, Lwazi Mvovo, partnered to share a wealth of know-how of the game with the youngsters.

Malotana played in the 1999 Rugby World Cup for the Springboks, becoming the first black player to don the green and gold.

He is a TV presenter and a popular Xhosa rugby commentator for SuperSport.

He is currently the head coach of Tshwane University of Technology Vikings, and also had stints as the Lions development officer and assistant coach in 2009.

In 2010, he became the backline coach of the SA women’s Under-20 national team.

Mvovo played most of his rugby for the Sharks.

He played 17 Tests for the Springboks between 2010 and 2016 and was part of the 2015 World Cup squad.

Apart from the Sharks, Mvovo also had a stint with Canon Eagles in Japan.

He is currently a coach at the Sharks Academy.

The SA Institute for Drug-Free Sport (Saids) also attended the event.

Saids’ mission is to detect, deter and prevent the use of prohibited substances and methods in sport, which are contrary to the principles of fair play and the health and wellbeing of athletes.

Highly-publicised cases involved Springboks’ Aphiwe Dyantyi and Chiliboy Ralepelle, who were handed doping bans of four years and eight years respectively.
