Great start to season for Komani Royals

- REP REPORTER

Komani Royals started their promotional league season like a house on fire on Sunday when they travelled to East London to play their first game of the season against Hamilton Cricket Club (Hams) away from home.

Royals won the toss and decided to set the tone with the bat in hand. Keith Kroutz (28) and Keneo Maytham (7) had to assess the pitch conditions and stick it out for a few overs.

Maytham was the first wicket to fall in the forth over, trapped leg before wicket by De Lange.

Royals then lost a few quick wickets and the run rate dropped for a short while before the captain, Anathi Joe, blasted his way to an entertaining 91 runs. He displayed some power shots, hitting 9 fours and 6 sixes, clearing the boundary with ease before a lapse of concentration caused the loss of his wicket nine runs short of a century.

Royals’ tail wagged for a few overs, adding valuable runs at the back end of the innings with Reinhardt Stride (26) and Siviwe Ngoqo (21) frustrating the opposition with a few boundaries and quick running between the stumps. Royals posted 254 runs in 48.4 overs.

Hams came in and offered little to no resistance in their response. Z Scott was the top scorer for Hams with 48 runs as the team struggled to cope against Royals’ bowling attack.

Hams struggled their way to 112 all out with Kroutz being

the top of the bowlers, bagging 4 wickets in 4 overs and only conceding 11 runs.

The four bowlers used by Royals on the day all chipped in

with wickets, gelling perfectly together as a unit. Royals won the game by 145 and are playing Super Eagles at Queen’s College on Sunday.
