Good sports clean up Whittlesea CBD

- ABONGILE SOLUNDWANA

Sada Legends is not just a football and netball-orientated club but a platform to influence change in the community through sport.

Club members mobilised volunteers to join their cleanup campaign initiative in the Whittlesea CBD on Saturday.

According to Sada Legends secretary Lavisa Nomkonwana, part of the club’s mission was to spot gaps where there was a need in the community.

This time it was the unclean state of the town’s environment that cauught their attention and made them act.

“The litter made us take a stand. We asked volunteers to assist us. Our town is very dirty and this is why we decided to tackle it first in our campaign initiative. This is for us to demonstrate that cleanliness is important and key,” Nomkonwana stated.

He believed that the health and safety of the community was paramount to preventing the spread of diseases.

Nomkonwana said the bigger solution was for the local municipality to ensure that litter was collected and disposed of in the dump site.

The second resolution was for cleaning awareness campaigns to enforce the culture of keeping the environment clean among public members.

“We are looking forward to bringing in more initiatives to benefit our communities. We are also planning a fun run on December 10 which will be followed by a Christmas gift handover for newborns in Hewu Hospital,” Nomkonwana said.

Last year they visited an old age home in Shiloh where they spent time with senior citizens and bought them groceries.

The community initiatives were resourced from the team’s pocket and through the assistance of residents.

Nomkonwana said the sports club, which was established last year in March, aimed to also develop and empower youth.

“We organise tournaments for the youth to keep them busy and to unearth local talent. The youth usually play their games before us when we compete against other teams within the region,” Nomkonwana said.
