During the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Child Abuse, there are a lot of programmes in place that seek to educate people about gender-based violence. The Rep reporter, Uviwe Jara took to the street to ask people about the impact of these events in curbing the abuse.

Dr Bathini Gubuza from Khowa

16 days of activism events are not significant because it is just a special period of something which it is supposed to be an everyday thing. Genderbased violence is supposed to be included in the school curriculum so focusing on it only for 16 days does not do anything.

Liyema Manjiya from Southbourne

I think these programmes do have a role to play because people are now aware of the abuse against women and children. People are also acting against abuse now because of these programmes that always teach people about abuse.

Mthetheleli Maseti from Newrest

Abusing women and children is a total red flag and these programmes are making people aware of the abuse and also aware of where they can report it. These programmes are doing great work but they need to happen more often.

Zinobia Abrahams from Newrest

A couple of days back, my friend became a victim of abuse, as she was beaten by her boyfriend and I am not happy about that. These events should also act against abuse or abusers.

Renwill du Plessis from Newrest

I think it’s helping a little but somehow not too much because the abuse against women and children still continues in our communities. Not even the police are taking action because people get arrested today and you meet that same person walking free the following day.
