EMLM fixes Whittlesea roads
Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality (EMLM) is giving the Whittlesea area a facelift, after three road maintenance projects were announced in three villages.
According to EMLM spokesperson Lonwabo Kowa, the projects are running simultaneously.
“The three are projects that were initiated to restore the quality of roads linking Whittlesea to Hewu villages,” Kowa said.
“These projects began in August and are set to be completed at the end of November and include a 5.6km road from Ngcamngeni village to Mabheleni village, a 5.4km road between Romanslaag village and Tsitsikama village, and a project to jet clean, and clear line channels and catch pits in Ekuphumleni township stormwater,” he said.
Kowa said after the disastrous floods early this year, EMLM took stock of all road infrastructure damages in all 34 wards, costed them and applied for funding for the repairs and for reconstruction.
“These have been the first areas to get funding from the department of cooperative governance & traditional affairs, and more funds are expected,” he said.
Commenting on construction progress, ward 24 councillor Sibongile Neli said: “This project will bring a great relief to motorists, businesses and all road users who have been struggling to connect to other villages and to travel to Whittlesea town.”
Neli said floods had damaged their roads to a point that motorists had to take longer routes to avoid damage.
“We are aware that these were not the only roads to be damaged and we are hopeful that our municipality will be able to secure more funds.
“We are satisfied with the progress,” he said.
