- UVIWE JARA

Mlungisi police station’s Women’s Network including domestic violence co-ordinators, sector managers and officers donated food and furniture to a struggling young family in Newvale on Wednesday as part of the 16 Days of Activism campaign against the abuse of women and children.

The team was led by Lieutenant-Colonel Thobeka Gcebe, who is also the champion for the local women’s network.

Speaking to The Rep, Gcebe said the district Women’s Network champion, Captain Nombulelo Khanyisa Tsibani, also attended the event.

Gcebe said the family were identified by sector managers, led by Sergeant Mfundo Ntsonkotha.

Gcebe said Newvale was one of the hotspot areas in the district for gender-based violence cases.

She said the young family recently lost their mother to GBV.

Beneficiary Mthuthuzeli Lamani, who takes care his two nephews, said the donations would make a big difference in the children’s lives.

“I am happy to see that people are noting me, my neighbours who were with me during the time of my mother’s death, the police and their superiors,” he said.

“I am grateful for their support to me and my family.”

He said it would be a joyous festive season for the family knowing that they would not have to worry about food.

“We did not even have proper furniture but with the donations made today, we are happy that we received it as well so that the home can be more appealing.

“I am only depending on R350 which is not enough for all of our needs,” Lamani said.
