Have fun now, worry in January

- Phumelele P Hlati

Here we are, facing another end of the year. I hope you have long dispensed with the unnecessary and ultimately useless New Year’s resolutions charade, as more often than not, no-one sticks to or fulfills them.

Where is that gym wear you so proudly bought at the beginning of the year and what happened to the year’s worth of gym membership fees you paid?

For how long did you stick to the healthy diet you swore you would keep to?

Where are those slimming pills and all other useless herbal shakes you bought in your fruitless quest for weight loss?

How much do you weigh now as compared to last year this time?

How did your resolution to quit smoking go? Have you kept your resolution to stop drinking or was it the empty pocket in January that was saying this?

What is wrong ndikuqedela injabulo? Am I being a spoil sport and a party pooper? The festive season proper is about to begin and many people are making their way back from a long slog at work and looking forward to relaxing and letting their hair down for the following two weeks, at least.

Many have been away from friends and family for months because they work far from home and the festive season is the perfect time for them to come see them and rekindle old friendships and dare I say, old relationships too.

The festive season is no longer than 15 days and yet we make so much hay during that period that by the time it is January it feels like it has been over a month.

We attend so many functions during this period and sometimes we attend three in a single day, depending on how many of the people you know are hosting such events.

We get to see family members and get to visit our ancestral homes and they get filled with relatives we have not seen in ages.

This is the time we get to make grand plans for gettogethers with friends and sometimes get to hang out with new people and have loads and loads of fun.

This is what festive season is all about do not allow those that will remind you about school fees, uniforms and all real life stuff to dampen your mood.

Of course, these are important but we can deal with that in January when the time comes.

I am not saying let us spend our hard-earned cash recklessly and end up having to take out cash loans to carry us until the next pay day.

Our lives are a long drawn out slogs, we get through a lot of stressful situations throughout the year. We definitely deserves the down time which the festive season offers us.

To you all let me say, “Merry Christmas and a glorious new year till we see each other again in 2024”.

Please spare a thought for those who are enjoying their last festive season as members of parliament and as government MECs and ministers 2024 will be rough.
