QBBC to celebrate a milestone
Club planning warm-up tournaments ahead of anniversary
Queenstown Boys Boxing Club (QBBC) is looking to a year filled with success as it aims at hosting a series of boxing tournaments this year.
QBBC coach Mabuti Mapeyi said: “Before the (main) tournament, we will have a build-up tournament for the club, which will be having an anniversary on March 16 2024.”
The build-up tournaments are expected to commence this month (January) and February.
Mapeyi added that they had also invited clubs from the national level to take part in the much anticipated anniversary with clubs from the province and the entire district.
“What is more important to us is celebrating the milestone of the club which was formed on March 13 1918 so we need to celebrate that,” said Mapeyi.
Apart from the tournament, QBBC is also looking at motivating the veterans to be more involved in grooming boxers as they have around seven boxers who will be turning professional this year.
“We do not want to hold back these boxer. We want them to bring back the professional boxing spark for Komani,” Mapeyi said.
Mapeyi is looking for boxing clubs that will be having boxers who will be turning professional in mid-February.
With his dedication to develop boxing in the district, he has also recruited women to be part of QBBC where they will be doing different duties in boxing.
“We have Bongiwe Nocanda, Khanya Mbenyane, Makadunyiswe
Cwenga and Simamkele Mbaanga, who will be assisting me because I was going alone all these years.
“Youth is highly needed to bring fresh ideas on how we can grow boxing,” Mapeyi said.
One of his visions this year is to not only focus on boxing but other codes as well, where they will be looking at also having social activities for children.
They are also on the hunt for sponsors, as most of the time they fund events from their own pockets.
