Confederation asks codes to register
Organisation wants to compile list of events for year
Chris Hani Sports Confederation general secretary Mabhuti Mapeyi has called on all sporting codes in the Chris Hani region to register with them as they a list of activities lined up for the whole year.
In an interview with The Rep, Mapeyi said they carter for every sporting code and would like all the codes that have not been getting any support to contact them.
“In the meetings we had late last year and early this year, we agreed to draft our year plan.
“Our focus this year is to look at the disadvantaged sport codes such as table tennis, chess, hockey, volleyball, cycling and swimming. Our main aim is to look at how we can assist these sport codes going forward,” Mapeyi said.
He said, as the confederation, they had good relations with the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (DSRAC) and the municipality.
“We are working well with both these stakeholders with the hope of taking sport forward in the region.
“Although we don’t have funds, we are trying to do whatever we can to assist. The confederation depends on donations and we have to beg people to donate,” Mapeyi said.
Mapeyi encouraged sports codes to register with the confederation or their sport councils to get assistance.
“Our focus this year is to train the coaches, administrators, umpires and referees. Our target is to have 1,000 people trained this year but if we fall short we are hoping to have 500.
“All these people must have certificates by the end of the year,” he said.
Mapeyi said, with the help of the municipality and DSRAC, they have an office at Thobi Kula Indoor Sport Centre.
“We are busy organising the Chris Hani District Mayoral Cup which will be played this month. All the local mayoral cup winners will compete for the district cup where a team will be selected to represent the district in the Premier Games early next month,” he said.
He said rugby, cricket, soccer and netball were included in the cup.
“We urge all the local municipalities to submit the names of the winning teams to the Chris Hani District Municipality special programmes unit offices or the confederation offices,” he said.
Mapeyi said their aim was to unite the people of the region through sport and encourage young people to take part in sport, be it in administration or other avenues.
