Opinions on the street

- Uviwe Jara

March is known as Human Rights Month. The Rep reporter government to focus more on.

Monwabisi Mnyaka from Mlungisi

There’s nothing to celebrate because there is no service delivery. We have no roads, meaning cars need to be fixed more often, we have no houses. People are living in shacks and are taken to temporary structures when there’s a disaster. Going into elections, people are promised houses, which are lies.

Phathiwe Gqola from Ezibeleni

Right now, I have no water in my house. We have electricity outages. What will make me want to celebrate the month of human rights whereas I do not have any rights. I am not working, even though the government promised us jobs. Children apply for NSFAS but get rejected. took to the street to hear about which rights people want the

Nomsa Ngaka from Lesseyton

They plead for our votes yet, as soon as they are in power, they do not care about our rights. I registered for a house in 2007 and was told to sign in 2009 but I never received it. When I checked this year, my name was on a 2016 list meaning my house was given to someone else. We have no rights.

Nana Nojekwa from Ezibeleni

The government needs to strengthen the protection of women against those who are killing us and raping young girls. The perpetrators do not get prosecuted but we need to see them rotting in jail for us to feel safe. Our rights as women need to be protected.

Matebezi Koyi from Ntabethemba

Our government does not care about the rights of the elderly and I wish they would prioritise us. For example, we came to the Phelophepha train and we have been sleeping outside since Sunday because of the number of people that are here. It would have been better if there were shelters provided.
