The Rep

FACE 2 FACE

- /Jeff Meyers

What impact do you want to make as a newspaper distributor?

I want the community to be informed of what’s happening around them, in the country and abroad.

What challenges do you face when distributing the papers?

My first challenge is waking up at three every morning. The other challenge is that when the newspapers arrive late in Komani; I receive the blame at the shops but I never hear a word when the newspapers are early. There are many unforeseen circumstances that contribute to the newspapers being late at times.

Which papers do you distribute and what do you love about your job?

The Daily Dispatch, Soccer Laduma (weekly), Sunday Times, City Press, Rapport, Daily Maverick, Mail & Guardian ( Sunday deliveries). I love my job because I like travelling. I don’t work under pressure, except when the newspapers are late. When I’m done dropping the newspapers, I have the whole day for myself.

What can individuals do in their community to impact lives?

Impacting lives starts at home and with yourself. Individuals can impact the lives of people by being involved “hands on” by helping to fight crime and make the community safe, by educating the community in various aspects of life and by volunteering to improve the community.

What societal matter is not getting enough attention?

SA is one of the countries globally with the highest rate of alcohol abuse. It’s a big problem that leads to many people’s downfall, at work, at home, even in our schools.

What would you like to see more of in The Rep newspaper?

The first thing people look for in the Rep is the deaths. When they are done with that, then they are done with the Rep without reading the other reports. I would like to see more educational programmes in the Rep, where people can, on a weekly basis, learn the pros and cons of certain issues in life to better their lives.

Will you be voting, and what election outcome do you wish for?

I will vote in the upcoming elections. I always say it doesn’t matter which party wins the elections, as long as they put their money where their mouth is and keep the promises that they made before the elections. We know what happens after the elections.

Which human right is most frequently violated and which one is best protected in SA?

We had endless electricity problems in certain areas of Komani. Load-shedding makes it worse. But I see it’s improving slightly. We still experience water problems, which is the most important human right.

As a Pirates fan, do you believe that you will be able to defend the Nedbank Cup and why?

Pirates showed the country they’re a team to be reckoned with after beating Kaizer Chiefs in the last derby. Most definitely Pirates will defend their Nedbank Cup... Up the Bucs!

What makes your town or area special?

The only things that are special in Komani are the specials in the supermarkets. What is special for me is the people I’m staying with in my area, (even) with all their shortcomings.
