ANCWL mourns former regional secretary
Magwashu remembered for dedication to organisation
The Chris’Hani s League ANC Women (ANCWL) is mourning the passing of Nongazi Gladys Magwashu, 69, who was Chris Hani’s ANC Veterans’ League regional task team co-ordinator.
Magwashu, a long-serving member of the ANC, died after a long illness on Saturday.
The ANC held a memorial service for Magwashu at the Thobi Kula Indoor Sports Centre on Wednesday.
Chris Hani ANCWL antigender-based violence programme co-ordinator Bulelwa Mgijima said that Magwashu devoted much of her time and energy to the league.
Mgijima worked closely with Magwashu for many years and spoke highly of her dedication and commitment.
“Magwashu was a former secretary of the regional women’s league, having served two terms. She was also instrumental in establishing the movement to fight against gender-based violence in Enoch Mgijima, and appointed me to lead the movement.”
Mgijima recalled how Magwashu taught her the importance of wearing the league’s blouse with pride and dignity, sharing the significance of the blouse and what it represented within the organisation.
The Chris Hani region ANCWL said Magwashu’s death had robbed the ANC of an extraordinary freedom fighter whose contribution, commitment and sacrifices to the liberation of the people would be remembered forever.
“Her involvement in the struggle for democracy and her efforts to free people from oppression will forever be engraved in our hearts.
“Magwashu became politically active from a tender age. She was a rare breed, dedicated, humble and a dependable loyal servant.”
She served the ANC diligently including her elected position as the regional secretary of the ANCWL from 2008 to 2017.
“It is difficult to talk about Magwashu in the past and we commit ourselves to emulate this hardworking gentle giant and principled cadre of our movement. We send our deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, friends, loved ones and ANC Veterans League on this sad loss,“the organisation said.
She will be laid to rest in Mlungisi on Monday.
