- UVIWE JARA

Six soccer teams battled it out for a first prize of R1,600 and a consolation prize of R800 in a tournament that took place at Luvuyo Lerumo High School grounds on Saturday.

The Top Six tournament featured four teams from Komani, one from Machibini and one from Merino Walk Village.

The six teams were: Kaizer United, Jozi United, Mountain Eagles, 1860 Munich, Young Chiefs and Pemba FC.

Kaizer United chair Kaizer Mapoy, who organised the tournament said: “This is a tournament that seeks to start a friendship between our teams and teams outside Komani. We also want to keep children busy with sport.”

Kaizer United played their first game against Young Chiefs which was a tight match decided on penalties after Young Chiefs got a late equaliser that led to them winning on penalties by 4-2.

“Our game went well as most of my players were at school but my boys gave it their all and we lost on penalties. We were leading the game but our mistake at the back led to us losing our lead and the win,” Mapoyi said.

Young Chiefs coach Monica Sakawuli said: “We played well even though my defence was not as sharp as they could be but they managed to bounce back. We thought Kaizer United won the game but the spirit of my boys saw us getting a goal with only seconds to spare.”

The final game of the tournament was between 1860

Munich and Mountain FC where Mikhulu ‘Mshishi’ Swaartbooi’s goal was enough to secure a victory for 1860.

1860 Munich coach Zuko Mlungu said: “This win was a big boost following our team being knocked out of the Easter tournament. It boosted the confidence of the players, ahead of our LFA season.”

Mountain Eagles coach Msokoli Ndamane said: “We were happy with the way the tournament went. Officials were fair. Reaching the final means we played very well.
