THE CITY of Ekurhuleni said the phase one construction for the city’s Integrated Rapid Public Transport Network was well under way in parts of Tembisa, with the construction of pedestrian bridges expected to take place in March.

This work will include the lifting of heavy structural steel elements, which will require closure of the affected roads for the safety of motorists and pedestrians.

Road closures are expected to take place on Saturday and Sunday, affecting Station 14 between Andrew Mapheto Drive and Transformation Street and Station 12 between Andrew Mapheto Drive and

The city apologised for the inconvenience.

Spokesperson Themba Gadebe said that to carry out the important project safely, they were planning to close off a part of the road during the lifting process.

“We will close off the southbound side completely and divert traffic going into and coming out of Tembisa to the north and vice versa, depending on which side of the road is closed off to the public,” Gadebe said.

The construction of the pedestrian bridge at Station 12 was expected to continue again from March 10 at 2pm to March 11 at 10am.
