Pair still at large after daring escape
THE two prisoners who made a daring escape at the high court in Joburg two days ago are still at large.
Gauteng police spokesperson Captain Mavela Masondo said awaiting-trial prisoners Mongezi Mcunukelwa, 31, and Sbonelo Nkosingiphile Thwala, 25, were still being sought by senior detectives. Police were also investigating the circumstances of the escape.
The pair were appearing at the court when they pulled off the escape at about 2pm on Wednesday. Although nobody was injured during the incident, the building was placed on lockdown for an hour as police searched the precinct. Masondo said the pair posed a danger to the public and had been facing serious charges.
Mcunukelwa faces two counts of murder that he allegedly committed in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, in July last year, while Thwala was appearing on two counts of murder he allegedly committed in Jeppe in April as well as for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Charges of escaping from custody will be added.
Police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of the suspects. Members of the public should call their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
