Pair still at large after dar­ing es­cape

THE two pris­on­ers who made a dar­ing es­cape at the high court in Joburg two days ago are still at large.

Gaut­eng po­lice spokesper­son Cap­tain Mavela Ma­sondo said await­ing-trial pris­on­ers Mongezi Mcunukelwa, 31, and Sbonelo Nkosingiphile Th­wala, 25, were still be­ing sought by se­nior de­tec­tives. Po­lice were also in­ves­ti­gat­ing the cir­cum­stances of the es­cape.

The pair were ap­pear­ing at the court when they pulled off the es­cape at about 2pm on Wed­nes­day. Al­though no­body was in­jured dur­ing the in­ci­dent, the build­ing was placed on lock­down for an hour as po­lice searched the precinct. Ma­sondo said the pair posed a dan­ger to the pub­lic and had been fac­ing se­ri­ous charges.

Mcunukelwa faces two counts of mur­der that he al­legedly com­mit­ted in Katle­hong, Ekurhu­leni, in July last year, while Th­wala was ap­pear­ing on two counts of mur­der he al­legedly com­mit­ted in Jeppe in April as well as for the un­law­ful posses­sion of a firearm and am­mu­ni­tion. Charges of es­cap­ing from cus­tody will be added.

Po­lice are ap­peal­ing for in­for­ma­tion on the where­abouts of the sus­pects. Mem­bers of the pub­lic should call their near­est po­lice sta­tion or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
