Trump a tactless tweeter

- SOL MAKGABUTLANE

BY the time President Donald Trump leaves the White House in 2020 (if he’s not impeached) or, heaven forbid, in 2024 (if he’s re-elected), he will have achieved many lows for a modern US president.

He is unstitching every fabric that his predecessor Barack Obama put together, has ostracised close US allies, infuriated everyone else, makes policy as he goes along, and announces important state matters via Twitter.

Now, in a new feat, he will go down as the president who spurred hundreds of newspaper outlets to come together to hit back at his fierce attacks on the press. On Thursday, more than 350 newspapers across the US criticised him in their editorials for repeatedly accusing media outlets of “fake news”.

He has also previously branded news organisations the enemy of the American people.

He paid tribute to soul diva Aretha Franklin, a few days after calling another black woman, former White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, a “dog”. Even if he was cross with Amarosa, he could have couched his language in more presidential terms. Can you picture JFK, Roosevelt or Lincoln calling people “dogs”?

Isaac Newton said that “Tact is the art of making a point without making an enemy.”
