Plenty of fizz from Dawie in Dr Pepper win

- GRANT WINTER

DAWIE van der Walt held his nerve to win the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper on Sunday.

It was his second victory on this year’s Web.com Tour and not only did the big South African earn $121500 and move to No 3 on the moneylist, but he is now assured of a coveted tour card for the 2015/16 PGA Tour. The 32-year-old carded a final round even-par 72 at Highland Springs Country Club in Missouri and finished at 23-under 265, two strokes better than Tour rookie Smylie Kaufman (70).

“I feel very fortunate,” said Van der Walt. “I didn’t think 72 was going to be enough. Everything was just a little bit off for the final round, but I’ll take it.

“My goal coming into this week was to secure my PGA Tour card. I came to America to play college golf and my goal after that was to play on the PGA Tour and now it’s a reality.” Van der Walt attended Lamar University in Texas, competed on the golf team and earned a degree in applied science. Now he is set to compete on the grandest stage in golf.

The man from the Boland, who played amateur golf for South Africa, also won the Chile Classic on this year’s Web.com Tour.

Twice a winner on the European Tour, he set a 54-hole scoring record of 23-under 193 in the Price Cutter Championship with rounds of 63, 65, 65 on the first three days.

On the Challenge Tour, South Africa’s Brandon Stone tied for second on 15-under 273 in the Gant Open in Finland. He is now a step closer to his dream of earning his European Tour card as he lies eighth on the Challenge Tour rankings, with the top 15 at the end of the year gaining their European Tour cards.

The tournament was won on 20-under 268 by Germany’s Dominic Foos, who, at just 17 years and 347 days, became the youngest winner in European Challenge Tour history.
