Roger Kebble found dead

- STAFF REPORTER

ROGER Kebble – the father of slain businessman Brett Kebble – is dead.

Roger died yesterday afternoon, in what appears to be a suicide.

He was discovered in his car in Bishopscourt, Cape Town, with a gunshot wound to the head, radio station 702 reported.

Roger’s son Guy confirmed the incident but he was too distraught to comment further.

He had earlier told the radio station that his 78-year-old father had been unwell for some time and had apparently felt he was becoming a burden.

Guy said he didn’t believe a crime was involved.

However, Cape Town police have opened an inquest docket into the matter.

The Kebble family had been in the spotlight since 2005, when wealthy mining magnate Brett was killed in what was later determined to be have been an assisted suicide.

Brett was shot dead in Melrose, Joburg, in September that year while driving to a dinner engagement with a business associate.

He was ill and apparently felt he was a burden

In 2006, another businessman and alleged underworld figure, Glenn Agliotti, was arrested for the alleged murder. Agliotti, a convicted drug dealer, had close links with former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi, who was later charged with corruption, fraud, racketeering and defeating the ends of justice.

He was found guilty on the corruption charges and was acquitted in 2010 when a court ruled the State had failed to make a strong enough case against him.

The gunmen who killed Brett – Nigel McGurk, Mikey Schultz and Faisal Smith– were given indemnity from prosecution in exchange for testimony against Agliotti. They said Brett wanted to die and that they were promised R500 000 each to kill him.
