1000 Drawings help to educate inner-city kids

ASPIRING artists of all levels will meet tonight to draw for charity at the 1 000 Drawings event.

Everyone and anyone is encouraged to bring their drawing gear to Wolves Café in Illovo and draw on A5 pieces of paper.

The event is held once a year in Joburg and the “artists” donate the pictures to 1 000 Drawings.

These artworks – be they doodles, scribbles, graffiti, sketches or oil paintings – will be sold at the Night of 1 000 Drawings Art Exhibition in Joburg.

“At R100 a piece, you could get your hands on a oneof-a-kind, original work by tomorrow’s big stars or something beautiful to make you smile,” the organisers said on their Inky Doodle Session Facebook event page.

Telri Stoop of Paper Snap design and illustration studio, which is hosting today’s event, says those who can’t make the doodle session can also make an A5 artwork at home and take it to a drop-off point.

Paper Café has donated the paper for the event and Herbert Evans Art Shop has donated some art materials. All the proceeds will go to Streetlight Schools, a non-profit organisation (NPO) that aims to create affordable and exceptional primary schools for innercity children.

The NPO has already launched an experimental education centre in Jeppestown and plans to start its first school in January next year. Although its most pressing needs are building costs and teacher salaries, it would consult with 1 000 Drawings and decide together how to spend the funds raised. The event starts at 6pm. The drop-off points and more information about the event can be found on http://johannesburg.1000 drawings.org
