Ready, steady, go: WAGS put best foot forward

-

REALITY TV is the same as a soap to me: melodramatic, jaw-dropping, bitchy and addictive. While I steer clear of reality offerings – mostly to preserve my brain cells – there are moments when logic and restraint abandon me.

WAGS is one of the shows that left me addicted. The title comes from the renowned synonym for “wives and girlfriends” of highprofile sports personalities.

The series offers a fly-on-the-wall perspective of the outspoken, dropdead gorgeous wives and partners going about their daily lives.

This show oozes swag with its hot rides, mansions and seriously flashy lifestyles.

At the outset, viewers are introduced to the protagonist.

Now the wives/fiancées are at the upper echelon of the WAGS’ scale and they take much joy in flaunting that in the faces of the girlfriends and “wannabes”.

Barbie Blank, fiancé of professional hockey player Sheldon Souray, seems to be the queen bee of the glamour puss rat pack. She is outspoken and calls people out on their bulls**t. And she has serious beef with Natalie Halcro (girlfriend of footballer Shaun Phillips) and her cousin, Olivia Pierson.

Aside from disliking their lack of class, she loathes their disrespectful behaviour. But, hey, the two are party girls and supermodel Nicole Williams (live-in girlfriend of NFL player Larry English) has struck a rapport with the two. So much so, that they even agreed to do a tasteful nude shoot together.

By the way, Natalie has a cleavage that’s in the league of Anna Nicole Smith’s and she is a social media celebrity.

Then there is Ashley North, who just can’t seem to get fiancé Dashon Goldson to set a wedding date. And they have been together for 11 years and have a daughter.

Autumn Ajirotutu (wife of NFL player Seyi) and Sasha Gates (wife of NFL player Antonio) haven’t unleashed their claws as yet.

WAGS looks at the personal joys, troubles and fears of the women. Some, like Nicole, are terribly possessive and this creates serious tension in the relationship. That’s also because they know that their partners are magnets for “hoes”.

That said, appearance is everything. They need to look their best all the time, irrespective of their mummy duties.

These women have bodies to die to for – but they also have the same concerns as every other female. And that makes them more relatable. Not that we can all prance around in Louboutins or take a spontaneous trip to Las Vegas for a party, mind you.

Meanwhile, Olivia is the wildcard – more so because she has yet to land herself a man and is eyeing that black card that wives have with serious envy. She has a mouth on her. And she really drags down her cousin – but Natalie is blind to this.

Love them or hate them, but you won’t be able to resist the salaciousness offered by WAGS. And these women put the “D” in divas!

airs on E! (DStv channel 124) on Fridays at 9pm.
