HEATWAVE WARNING

- ILANIT CHERNICK

A HEATWAVE is expected to hit Gauteng and surrounding provinces from today.

The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for high temperatures and the danger of veld fires.

Forecaster Dipuo Tawana said the heatwave was caused by high atmospheric pressure over the central and north-eastern parts of the country.

“This high causes air to sink, and as it sinks, the air warms up. A lack of moisture is also adding to the heatwave taking place.

“We take the average of the hottest month and add five degrees to it – that happened in January this year,” Tawana explained.

“If you have that condition for three days persistently, that’s when you have a heatwave.”

She said maximum temperatures in Joburg, Pretoria and Vereeniging would peak between 34 and 35°C.

“Unfortunately there is no rain or relief in sight for Gauteng, and the high temperatures will persist until Thursday,” Tawana added.

ER24 spokeswoman Chitra Bodasing said South Africans should prepare themselves for the heat.

“We would like to remind you to stay well hydrated and use sunscreen when you’re in the sun.

“Remember to wear a hat or cap and don’t forget your pets – they also need extra water,” she said.

“Please also keep an eye on your kids playing outside and remember to keep them safe around swimming pool.”
