Will The Game get bad rap for going soft?

- MUNYA VOMO

HIP HOPhas an unwritten rule that rappers usually need to come off as hard-core. However, with the rise and rise of reality TV, even rappers are getting in on the act and when they do, they can’t get their game face on. Rappers like Snoop, T.I, Nelly and The Game have all had TVshows depicting just how soft they can be. Of course, they can’t be hard with their spouses and kids, but that’s not how they sound on their music.

Take The Game, for example, who has released a number of albums on which he raps about life on the streets of America. Yet on Marrying the Game, he shows his vulnerable side as he and ex-fiancee Tiffney try to figure out if they should be together. They have kids so whatever they decide, it has to be with them in mind.

In the new season, we meet the rapper and the mother of his kids talking about what is best for their future. She has had enough and he wants to change for them so they are at the negotiation table, again. The cool thing about this story is that it is verifiable through the media. So when they are not shooting Marrying the Game, this pair make the news as they share where they are in their tumultuous relationship. This can’t be healthy for any union. The publicity that they get from the show obviously draws a lot of unnecessary people into their lives, from close relatives to fans. Social media, though good for marketing products, is also dangerous because anyone can say anything.

Also, the kids could be harmed for life with the side-effects that publicity brings. In some cases, famous parents hide their offspring, but as far as The Game and Tiffeny are concerned, that doesn’t matter.

On the positive side, it’s a good thing that the couple love their kids and showing that on TV is admirable. It’s also cool that they open up and show their imperfections. It will just be hard to believe The Game on another hard-

core diss track after this.

Wednesdays at 7.30pm on Vuzu (DStv channel 116).
