Party on the high seas sure to make waves

- MUNYA VOMO

ONEOFthe coolest South African parties, yet held off South African shores, has to be Oh Ship. The party, which is held on a cruise liner, is brought to you by Savanna and 5FM with DJs Euphonik and Fresh as the headlining acts.

This year the party will be held on November 27 on the newly renovated MSC Sinfonia which can carries 2 600 party heads.

“We have been privileged to almost sell out the ship every time that we have had it. At worst, we reach the 95 percent mark in our sales, but the last one was 100 percent capacity. From what I hear, we are sold out on this one, too,” said Euphonik.

Besides himself and Fresh, other DJs will be also on board to make the party memorable. They include Roger Goode, Warras, Lerato Kganyago, Dino Bravo, Ms Cosmo, Sphectacular and Naves, Naked DJ, Ryan the DJ, Rob Forbes, Fix, Poppy and Milkshake.

“The Oh Ship concept is about two DJs (Fresh and Euphonik) throwing a series of parties with some of their friends. It’s about 72 hours of madness. We leave from Durban and sail to the Portuguese Islands where we party for a day, then we come back home in another series parties. It’s not for the faint-hearted; it’s for the people who are really serious about partying,” explained Euphonik.

“If you love crowds and unlimited partying away from your usual routine, then this is your scene,” he added.

The schedule on the ship promises to be hectic so Euphonik urged the would-be party goers to get plenty of rest before the voyage.

“We hardly ever get any sleep. The party starts from9am to 6am the next day. We give people about three hours to go and refresh and be back at it again. You will get value for your money because by the time you get home you will be finished,” he pointed out.

But what if you are not into the party life, or if you get tired along the way?

“There is a lot to do on the ship. There are restaurants, casinos, a theatre, clubs and pools. It is the perfect place to throw a party. There also other fun things to do on the ship which include wet T-shirt competitions, pyjama parties and even formal dinners,” said the DJ.

Although it might be pricey to get a ticket, (they cost as much as R3 000), Euphonik revealed that the party is still popular.

“This will be my fourth time doing this annually and I can attest to the fact that in the past three years I have never seen the same face twice. There are that many people. The whole thing feels like you have just stepped out of your home and there is a big party outside. People should just remember to pack holiday gear,” he said.

That said, as part of the organisers of the show, Euphonik admitted that they run into some stumbling blocks: “The biggest thing that stresses us out is making sure that the male/female ratio is right on the boat. We have had a fair balance because girls usually like doing these kinds of things in groups. So we have bachelorette and birthday packages for the ladies. We also want the age group to be right. So we are looking at anything between 18 and 35 as the core group. There is the odd 40year, old but that’s okay too.”
