SUPERSPORT UNITED
THEIR SEASON SO FAR
By their standards, SuperSport have been punching below their weight this season. Poor performances, inconsistencies and lack of commitment have characterised their season thus far. Matsatsantsa a Pitori are in ninth position with 13 points following three wins, four draws and four losses. They have also scored just nine goals. That doesn’t read well for a side that has the likes of Jeremy Brockie, Kingston Nkhatha and Thuso Phala, among others. The majority of Gordon Igesund’s players have not pushed themselves to the limit, withholding their best.
WHAT THEY DID RIGHT
For a team that has been below par, it’s hard to find positives. The best thing SuperSport did this season was to introduce Derwin Farmer, one of the most exciting youngsters in the PSL. They have also managed to find their way back to winning ways with recent victories that has eased the pressure on Igesund, who is under fire.
WHERE THEY FLOPPED
SuperSport have to be faulted for signing Michael Boxall and Isaka Chernac, who have battled to make the grade since the beginning of the season. Igesund has also made a blunder by releasing Lebogang Manyama – the winger was a key member of Supersport and his transfer has been a source of discontentment, even among the players. Their crashing out of the MTN8 in the first round and the semi-final loss to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Telkom Knockout has left a lot to be desired.
STAR PERFORMER
Whenever Derwin Farmer has gotten a chance to play, the South African youth international has been solid at the back. For a teenager, the maturity he displays belies his age. He reads the game very well and his tackles are timely. He is also not intimidated by players who may be more experience than him.
REQUIRED TRANSFER ACTIVITY
SuperSport may not need to make any new signings. They have quality players who need to change their attitude and win games. Igesund has to be careful lest he might be on the transfer list to unemployment.
REST OF THE SEASON OUTLOOK
Despite boasting great names with exceptional talent, SuperSport runs the risk of underachieving this season. Their chances of winning the championship are very slim, so the best they can do is to compete for honours in the Nedbank Cup. It’s going to be tough for them. Igesund has to win his players over before he can win matches. –
