AJAX CAPE TOWN

- Njabulo Ngidi

THEIR SEASON SO FAR

Winning the MTN8 might come with the biggest cheque in knockout competitions in the country – R8-million – but the title is something of a curse if the players don’t have their head screwed on right. The problem with being champions four games later and only a month into the season is that it sets the tone. Ajax have responded badly in this regard, picking up a measly two points out of 15 after being crowned MTN8 champions.

WHAT THEY DID RIGHT

It started with the introduction of Roger de Sa, who took the outfit to a major cup final in only his first season with the club. He did so in an environment where young players are given a chance to thrive – his hungry and energetic squad, mixed with a sprinkling of experience, has been a marvel to watch.

WHERE THEY FLOPPED

The Urban Warriors let the champions tag get to their head. The death of Cecil Lolo didn’t make matters any better. There have been two faces to Ajax so far: the pre-MTN8 champions who beat Maritzburg United, Free State Stars and Polokwane City and the post-MTN8 final Ajax which are yet to register a win – losing to Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United and Orland Pirates and drawing with AmaTuks and Chiefs.

STAR PERFORMER

One of the most iconic moments in this Ajax season was when Nathan Paulse was left gasping for air in a post-match interview. The veteran striker joked that he couldn’t keep up with Ajax’s spring chickens. He hasn’t tried to catch up with them, instead complimented them with his experience and has led from the front, scoring six goals – four of them in the Premiership.

REQUIRED TRANSFER ACTIVITY

While Paulse has done a good job at leading the outfit from the front, he hasn’t found someone to compliment him in front of goal. The absence of another prolific finisher has dented the club’s goal difference and they have conceded 12 goals but have also scored 12.A good partner for Paulse will help the club lose their MTN8 hangover.

REST OF THE SEASON OUTLOOK

The Urban Warriors have some exciting youngsters, some of them doing duty with the national Under-23. They have also matured quickly, building on a good run from last season. The club can finish in the top eight but they have the squad and the hunger to achieve more than that. –
