W Cape crashes claim 16
THE WESTERN Cape Department of Transport and Public Works said in a statement yesterday that 16 people had died on the province’s roads over the weekend. Department spokesman Byron La Hoe said eight pedestrians, five passengers and three drivers died. “Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 425 vehicles in 26 alcohol-blitz roadblocks across the province. Alcohol breath-testing was performed on 1 427 drivers and eight were arrested. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Brackenfell. At 0.86mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of breath, this is over three times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/ 1 000ml,” La Hoe said. A total of 156 speeding offences were recorded and more than 300 fines issued.
