THE WESTERN Cape Department of Transport and Public Works said in a statement yesterday that 16 people had died on the province’s roads over the weekend. Department spokesman Byron La Hoe said eight pedestrian­s, five passengers and three drivers died. “Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 2 425 vehicles in 26 alcohol-blitz roadblocks across the province. Alcohol breath-testing was performed on 1 427 drivers and eight were arrested. The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Brackenfel­l. At 0.86mg of alcohol/ 1 000 ml of breath, this is over three times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/ 1 000ml,” La Hoe said. A total of 156 speeding offences were recorded and more than 300 fines issued.
