GUARANTEE Trust Corporate Support Services has again secured a work-readiness program for unemployed commerce graduates for 2016.

This program is fully financed by Fasset, the sector education and training authority (Seta) for Finance, Accounting, Management Consulting and other Financial Services.

In the 12 years that they have been in operation, the programs run by Guarantee Trust have successfully placed more than 8000 graduates into the accounting, banking and commercial fields.

Applications for the new programme opened at the end of last year and there are still places available.

Applications close at the end February and the four-month program begins in early March.

A commercial degree or diploma from a tertiary study institution is what is required.

Economics, management, finance, accounting, internal auditing and financial information systems majors are all welcome.

In keeping with Fasset’s policies, graduates from rural areas are es- pecially welcome.

In the current high unemployment climate in the country, it is unfortunate that having no practical experience is often a barrier to entry into the professions.

The Fasset/Guarantee Trust programme counters this by presenting a work-readiness programme deals that with that provides innovative practical experience .

This allows them to get the graduate placed into a professional accounting firm and onto a Fassetregistered learnership en route to a professional qualification as an ac- countant.

Member firms belong to the various professional accounting institutes: SAIPA, SAICA, SAIBA etc.

For the current programme there are there are positions available for 240 graduates in Gauteng.

The program also runs in Durban, Cape Town, East London, Port Elizabeth, Nelspruit, Mahikeng, Polokwane and Bloemfontein.

The program is open to disabled graduates with an interest in this field. People living with a disability, may apply even if they are still pro- gressing with their tertiary financial qualification.

The program includes highly effective life skills and technical accounting components. These make it a good opportunity for commercial graduates to join the program and gain valuable training and simulated real work experience.

The practical, hands-on experience is gained via a unique and ground-breaking module called the Virtual Office.

Participants are exposed, in an intense way, to the rigours of being a trainee accountant in an actual accounting firm

The accounting office simulation module exposes participants to basic recordkeeping, ledger compilation, management accounts, financial statements, working papers, income tax and provisional tax returns, statutory returns and statutory registrations including VAT, UIF and PAYE.

Trainees will be completely familiar with the above skills having completed them for different businesses many times.

The intense intervention is designed to provide graduates with the experience professional accountants require from applicants. In other words, when they begin their learnerships, they will be able to hit the road running on day one.

The office simulation process is just one part of the standard fourmonth work-readiness program along with practical training in communication and other life and office skills.

Learners who have gone through this program are highly effective employees in the workplace.
