Golden oldies to rock and roll

THIS YEAR’S golden oldies will have their turn in the spotlight as legendary internatio­nal artists make their way to South Africa to indulge lifelong fans.

The roster includes worldrenow­ned acts such as Sixto Rodriguez, Roxette, Lionel Richie and Chris de Burgh.

In a statement about De Burgh, concert promoter Big Concerts said: “Big Concerts has confirmed that a sixth date has been added for Chris de Burgh in Joburg on Saturday, April 2 as part of his Hands of Man tour, (which is) presented by RSG and M-Net.”

De Burgh’s first major hits in South Africa include Lady in Red and Just Another Poor Boy.

“The year 1986 saw the release of Into the Light, Chris’s most successful record up to that point, which sold in excess of 10 million copies worldwide,” Big Concerts said. “It also featured the single

Lady In Red, which was No 1 in 50 countries and is still one of the most played on the planet.”

Legendary singer-songwriter Rodriguez also received much success in South Africa, with his last tour to South Africa selling out in minutes. During his tour, he performed to more than 40 000 fans across nine shows in Cape Town and Joburg.

With three decades in the music industry, Roxette are celebratin­g their success with the XXX – The 30th Anniversar­y Tour, and local fans of the rock band will be treated to South African acoustic rock band Watershed as the opening act.

Fans of Hello singer Lionel Richie will also have their turn in the sun when the multiplati­num selling, four-time Grammy-winning singer brings his All The Hits All Night Long tour to the country in March.
