Stories of love, lust and everything else

- MPILETSO MOTUMI @mane_mpi

THE WEEK of love is coming to an end. What better way to finish it than on a high with a good laugh?

Showing until tomorrow at the Joburg Theatre is the sexy comedy Six Inches.

The play is written and directed by Kristy Suttner and has all the ingredients for a good night out.

The adults-only play revolves around three characters – Tshepo, Cat and Didi, played by Bongile Lecoge-Zulu, Dikelo Mamiala and Emilie Owen, respectively.

The women share stories about love, lust and everything between the sheets, all in one juicy night.

The show had a successful run at the National Arts Festival last year and in 2015.

“It’s quite interesting how the play came about. I wrote it over 10 years ago,” said Suttner.

She was fresh out of university and found it fascinating to see how people explored their sexuality, and how different women dealt with issues.

“As different as we all are, we are all the same. I came from a sheltered home, and drama school showed me crazy things with sex and relationships and friendships.”

Suttner said the comedy was about how women deal with sex and their lives as a whole.

The play was revised three years ago with a younger crowd.

Opening night was on Valentine’s Day, and the show was sold out.

“The audience have been fantastic. They get so loud we have to stop the play and get them to stop. It really is amazing.

“The play is poignant and funny and has beautiful moments that everyone will share in.”

Suttner is no stranger to theatre – she is a singer, actress and producer, performing in Fiddler on the Roof and Mix Tape.

Her love for musical comedy started at a young age.

“I always used to make my brothers and cousins do crazy things with me on the patio at home. We have to create our own opportunities, especially in this industry,” she said.

She and her business partner, theatre and television actor Mortimer Williams, use music as a vehicle for comedy through their company, Ginger Cube Productions.

Six Inches is their only show that is not a musical.

The multitalented creatives also directed and created comedy cabaret piece The Full Morty and Live Jukebox.

Live Jukebox is an interactive musical game show that is on stage once a month at the Joburg Theatre.

‘It’s crazy and interactive, the audience run the show.”

The next Live Jukebox will be on February 25.

Six Inches will return to Grahamstown later this year for the annual festival.

For now, audiences can catch it at The Fringe at the Joburg Theatre until tomorrow.

Tickets cost R120.
