Entertaining on a budget

-

FOR those planning a holiday over the Easter period, the country’s economic downturn couldn’t have come at a worse time.

Considering the impending effects of junk status, people will have to watch every cent spent closer than ever. Luckily, there are still things you can do with your family during this time that won’t wreck your budget.

“Expenses often pile up on a holiday, from eating out to entertaining the kids. With the expected rise in cost of just about everything, everyone will be feeling the pinch. That’s why it’s so important to look for budget-friendly ways to entertain the whole family, especially the kids, over the holiday period,” says Susan Steward, the marketing manager for Budget Insurance.

Budget offers these savvy saving tips for family fun:

Take advantage of the last of the summer sun – with winter on its way, now is the best time to get outdoors. There are plenty of affordable outdoor activities around the country. Pack a picnic and eat it in a park. Have a bring and braai – everyone saves and gets to enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal.

If you’re planning a day out, pack snacks you can buy in bulk, instead of getting them on the go.

Get the kids involved in road trip preparations, like helping make the snacks – it will keep them out of mischief.

Eat a hearty meal at home before you go out so you don’t have to fork out money on fast food.

Have an Easter egg hunt at home, which will keep the kids busy for hours.

Have a craft day with the kids. It’s amazing what you can do with a few old toilet rolls, some paint, paper and a glue stick. Just Google Easter craft ideas and you’ll find tons of inspiration.

Remember that while you’re planning a little time off, criminals are not. Housebreaking incidents are known to increase over holiday periods.

“It’s a really good idea to check that your insurance is up to date, especially if you’re going away. It will give you peace of mind when driving off for that well-deserved break,” said Steward. – Staff Reporter
