Get your kicks on the Route 66 display at this year’s Rand Show

AS ALWAYS there will be a huge motoring component at this year’s Rand Show and for this event, which starts tomorrow at the Nasrec Expo Centre, organisers have assembled a special tribute to the famous American Route 66 highway.

The Route 66 exhibition will be contained in the Centre’s Hall 5, where showgoers can peruse a wide range of automobilia ranging from Model T Fords, to pre-war classics, to hippie Kombis and everything in between. Included in this collection will be three rare American models supplied by Centurion-based specialists Moselin Exclusive Cars - one of which is a 1954 Chevy C1 Corvette, believed to be one of just two examples in South Africa.

Moselin will also bring a 1965 C2 Corvette Stingray, complete with front fender exhaust outlets and retractable headlights which were considered a wild feature in the early ‘60s. The third car to be showcased by Moselin is a 1959 Cadillac Coupe de Ville, noted for having the tallest tail fins of all cars in an era known for jet fighter-inspired automotive design. Expect more than 80 vehicles, including numerous bike categories, in the specially demarcated Route 66 area.

The Cobra Club of South Africa in conjunction with Cobra specialists, The Snake Pit, will also perform a complete Cobra rebuild for spectators to watch from start to finish inside the hall.

“Interest in Cobras has never been higher, and this is really going to blow Rand Show visitors’ minds,” says The Snake Pit’s Paul de Klerk. “We will arrive with a freshly painted chassis and body, all the suspension and interior bits and, of course, an engine.”

Outside the hall, one of the country’s top drift teams will put on a tyre-shredding show, and for R150 visitors can also ride along and experience the thrill of sliding sideways from the passenger seats of Chevy Luminas and Nissan 350Zs. Alongside the drift track will be a unique bum board slope, where both young and old can slide around on their backsides, and at the new Action Zone freestyle motocross daredevils “Sick” Nick de Wit and his crew of top FMX riders, will defy gravity performing stunts for onlookers.

The Rand Show runs from tomorrow to Sunday April 23, from 9am to 7pm (last entry at 6 pm). Tickets at the gate are R150 for adults, R50 for pensioners, R50 for kids 13-16 years, R20 for 6-12 years, and under six enter free.
