Court hears of death of 4 in crash

- TOBY NGOMANE

HE ALLEGEDLY rammed into 10 people gambling on the side of the road, instantly killing four, but Khethani Mngomezulu managed to escape the horrific crash unscathed.

However, bystanders who had witnessed the accident turned against Mngomezulu, 21, assaulting him and breaking his jaw. It was a passing tow truck driver who rescued him from the mob.

On Tuesday, Mngomezulu made a brief appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court, following a visit to the hospital, his mouth covered with a scarf.

Mngomezulu, who came up to the dock from the holding cells, kept his head bowed for most of the proceedings, only looking up when being directly addressed.

The magistrate then requested that Mngomezulu speak through his lawyers because he was inaudible and cowering behind his scarf.

He was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning after allegedly driving drunk and ramming into a group of 10, killing four and injuring six.

Mngomezulu was charged with four counts of culpable homicide, reckless driving, driving under the influence, driving a vehicle without the owner’s consent and possible malicious damage of property. He also damaged three shops.

He was released on R5 000 bail, even though the prosecution had argued for R15 000.

Mngomezulu, from Venda and still a student, has been required to return to Limpopo where he stays with his father as part of the bail agreement. The matter was postponed to October 5 for further investigation.
