SA designer makes waves in Paris
Collection launched with his signature cognac
ASOUTH African fashion designer has taken his creations to arguably one of the most stylish places in the world: Paris.
David Tlale, together with cognac brand Courvoisier, showcased his latest collection to the Parisian fashion elite last week.
Fashionistas were given the opportunity to examine his collection from close-up on an installation, instead of a runway.
Tlale’s latest offering was modelled at the official residence of the South African Embassy in Paris.
Invitations were sent to a select number of people.
The event was an intimate affair attended by 60 special guests.
It was hosted by South Africa’s ambassador to France, Rapulane Molekane.
Tlale’s range consisted of 12 designs – 10 for women and two for men – from his most recent spring/summer collection.
In a bid to appeal to the Parisian market, this collection showcased Tlale’s signature aesthetic, with additional tweaks in pattern engineering as well as enhanced styles and finishing.
This spring/summer collection also celebrated the power of women through the use of bold shades such as bright pink, yellow, blue and green.
It also featured a multitude of textures including lace, twill and garments with voluminous cuts and overwhelming silhouettes.
“I kept it fresh and timeless, but made it exciting for women or men who aren’t scared to try something new,” said Tlale of his collection.
The reason for opting for an installation instead of a run- way show was to allow guests to examine his garments for themselves.
“People never get to engage with the garments and the designer.
“I opened up the floor to Paris to come and meet us from every angle.
“I wanted guests to really feel the entire experience, and what better way to do it than with my signature Courvoisier Noir cocktail in hand and a personal explanation of our journey of African luxury,” said Tlale about the event.
While Tlale is a household name in South Africa, his creations are garnering more international attention.
He has been the first South African to present a successful solo show for six consecutive seasons at the acclaimed New York Fashion Week from 2012.
In 2015, he made history when the international male model Tyson Beckford opened his show.
Following the success of his range in France, Tlale will be showing his full collection during Paris Couture Week in January.
