Miner dies in rockfall

ANGLO American Platinum yesterday reported the death of one of its miners in Rustenburg, North West . In a statement, the company said an employee died in a rockfall at Union Mine’s Spud shaft on October 31. Anglo American Platinum chief executive Chris Griffith extended condolence­s to the family, friends and colleagues of the miner. “We are deeply saddened by the number of fatalities at our operations in recent months. It is completely unacceptab­le and we are closely examining the cause of these incidents and any underlying issues that may have been contributi­ng factors.” He added that the company had instituted an internal investigat­ion.
