Miner dies in rockfall
ANGLO American Platinum yesterday reported the death of one of its miners in Rustenburg, North West . In a statement, the company said an employee died in a rockfall at Union Mine’s Spud shaft on October 31. Anglo American Platinum chief executive Chris Griffith extended condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the miner. “We are deeply saddened by the number of fatalities at our operations in recent months. It is completely unacceptable and we are closely examining the cause of these incidents and any underlying issues that may have been contributing factors.” He added that the company had instituted an internal investigation.
