Cops closing in on son’s killers – mom

- – Siphumelele Khumalo

A MOTHER who suffered a double tragedy when armed robbers shot her son outside a funeral parlour in Jabulani, Soweto, in late August believes police could be getting closer to finding his killers.

The gunmen robbed her family of R23 350, which they had withdrawn from a bank at Maponya Mall to pay for the funeral of her daughter Lindiwe Mtolo, 43, who died earlier in the same week.

Irene Mollo said the counselling she was receiving after a bullet grazed her head during the shootout was not making any difference or assisting her with the pain of losing her children.

The 61-year-old said police had traced and recovered her son’s iPhone last week.

She was then told that a man was arrested and had already appeared in court.

She said the accused had disclosed that he bought the deceased’s iPhone for just R120 from drug addicts in Protea, Soweto, but that he had nothing to do with the robbery and was not linked to the killers.

“I just want this man with the phone to speak and be honest and tell us where he got the phone.

“All I want is justice for my son. I can’t live like this anymore.

“The police are not telling us anything.

“It is frustrating and I don’t know what to do anymore.

“I feel so shattered and lonely,” she said while sobbing hysterically.

Police spokesperson Captain Mpande Khoza said the case was being dealt with at provincial level, and that he could not disclose any information.

“The case is still under investigation and we are still looking for the main suspects.

“That is all the information I can divulge at this stage because it could jeopardise the case,” he added.
