Maritzburg ready for ‘cowards’

- MINENHLE MKHIZE

MARITZBURG United coach Siyabonga Mdluli has warned his team to guard against complacency. Table-topping United face winless Platinum Stars at Harry Gwala Stadium on Sunday (10am kick-off) in a MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) clash.

The Team of Choice is brimming with confidence as they are yet to taste defeat. They have amassed 14 points in six league outings while Dikwena have only collected three points in six matches and are yet to bag maximum points in the current campaign.

Mdluli has warned his team to expect a very difficult encounter against Dikwena.

“I’ve told my players that this is going to be the toughest match we’ve played this season. This is like when you are fighting a coward. It is very dangerous to fight a coward because they can knock you down if they get an opportunity to strike. I’ve already told my players not to take Platinum Stars for granted. They will come to us with the mentality that they want to become the first team to beat Maritzburg United this season,” Mdluli elaborated.

Only two sides have been able to collect points against Maritzburg United this campaign – SuperSport United and Polokwane City. All of Chippa United, Lamontville Golden Arrows, Mamelodi Sundowns and Free State Stars have succumbed to the Team of Choice.

“We set a target to focus on each game. Obviously our goal is to maintain our position on top of the log. I wanted to win all the matches and I believe we should have won all our matches. Unfortunately in football things don’t always go your way but we will continue to work. The boys are committed and they are combining well. That’s what has assisted us. It is still too early. I don’t want to commit myself and say we want to win the league. Only after 10 games will I be able to say such. At the moment it is all about the game in front of us,” Mdluli explained.

Maritzburg thumped Chippa United 4-0 in their last encounter while Dikwena suffered their third loss of the season against Orlando Pirates.

The Diski Challenge Festival is taking place in KZN this weekend. Six games will be played at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi and one in Pietermaritzburg.
