The Star Early Edition

An outlet for young lensmen

- NOKUTHULA ZWANE

LOCAL photojournalist Phandulwazi “Phando” Jikelo will have his work exhibited during the Andrei Stenin International Photo Contest for young photojournalists.

The contest focuses on young photo reporters aged between 18 and 33, and will be hosting the Joburg leg of the global photojournalism exhibition at the Market Photo Workshop in Newtown today.

A selection of winning entries from all over the world will be showcased, and Jikelo’s will be there too.

Jikelo, 33, is a former Cape Times photographer who is now with the African News Agency.

He won first prize in the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest in September for his entry on the Grabouw Housing Protest.

The entry was one of 5 000 from 76 countries.

This exhibition forms part of the international tour of the Andrei Stenin International Press Photo Contest organised by the Rossiya Segodnya (Russia Today) media group under the support of the Commission of the Russian Federation for the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).

The contest is in memory of Russian photojournalist Andrei Stenin, who tragically lost his life in the field while covering the war in Ukraine in August 2014.

This is Russia’s only platform that supports young photographers by allowing them to make a name for themselves on a global scale.

The first leg of this exhibition was opened in Cape Town at Eclectica Contemporary.

The Joburg exhibition will be held at the Market Photo Workshop, 138 Lilian Ngoyi Street, Newtown and takes place from today until the 28th.

Partners of the exhibition include the Russian Embassy and specialist photographic provider ORMS Printing and Framing.
