Dad left holding the baby after builders didn’t deliver

- Jason van Bloemestein

I READ your article “Can you ever trust a builder?” It was very to-the-point and tells one what to look out for.

As much as I did that when starting my project before the birth of my baby girl, I had two builders on my site appointed by a company who supposedly specialises in getting builders’ contracts.

They have since basically left me with an incomplete outside and an interior with no fitted cupboards or kitchen sink to wash up or prepare food/bottles for my family.

As much as I documented and made sure I didn’t fall into that trap, I still came up short. I recorded the most important conversations from both builders with their empty promises and saved every email, text message and Whatsapp conversation, just proving how lowdown and deceitful they were at getting the money upfront.

Even the company that appointed them started distancing themselves from the builders. This I thought was strange as that then left me with holding the rotten tomato. Not only leaving the family held to ransom but leaving a family to now fork out more money to rectify… where builders were paid to deliver a service, I was left picking up the pieces. Georgie: The role of the company that appointed the builders is unclear, but I would take it up with the entity/person the contract was signed with – provided there was a contract in place and its nature, as it should contain clauses to deal with this sort of event. The next obvious routes would the NHBRC, the Master Builders’ Association or a lawyer.
